Nowadays the big buzz word is “the Cloud”, so what is the Cloud?
The Cloud is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over the Internet.

Most of the big companies in the market do provide Free Cloud Backup (or cloud storage) where you can store your files as a backup which can be accessed from anywhere as long as you can authenticate yourself using a username and a password.

Some of the Cloud Storage providers include:

Provider Solution Name
Google Google Drive
Microsoft SkyDrive
Apple iCloud
Dropbox Dropbox
Box Box
SugarSync SugarSync
Advantages
  • Free of charge
  • Different access method
  • Easy to use
  • Integrated with most mobile devices
Security Threats
  • Cloud storage providers have full access to your data and control where it is stored
  • No clear information about the infrastructure and the security mechanisms in place.
  • Your data can be at risk if there is a single successful breach
How to overcome such threats while still getting all the benefits?

ENCRYPTION is the solution. Before posting any information on the cloud you might want to encrypt your data using your trusted app or key and then upload it to the cloud to make sure that only you can view the encrypted content.

However, you need to limit what you store in the cloud even encrypted data to non-confidential data only. Don’t store work-related data in your personal cloud account. Finally, remember to choose a complex password and change it periodically.
